Backåkra

2019

This chair was designed in 2019 for the café and shop at Dag Hammarskjöld’s farmhouse at Backåkra in southern Sweden. Åke Axelsson wanted to introduce an element of lightness and playfulness in what is otherwise a rather somber environment. Backåkra is light and flexible, made from solid beech. The wave shape of the back gives movement to the room, reflecting the billowing fields that surround the old farmhouse. On one leg there is room for a knot or braid or something else of a personal nature. Thus Åke Axelsson’s Backåkra becomes someone’s own, unique chair.
