1976 - 2019

The timeless little Ararat chair belongs both to the seventies and to 2020. It was initially created for the Ararat exhibition held at Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1976. Ararat was a pioneering manifestation of environmental issues and organic production. It provided an early alternative vision of the future, acting as an eye-opener to a whole generation. Åke Axelsson contributed some furniture that was made in his workshop and in line with the theme of the exhibition: material and energy efficient, sustainable, easy to manufacture and to repair. Åke showed two variants of the chair together with a bench featuring expander legs.  A small number of chairs were produced. The original chair was preserved in Åke’s studio as an interesting idea that deserved to be developed. In 2019 production of the chair started up again. It now had legs made of ash and a firmer seat.
