The book gives an account of more than 200 different chair designs together with the ideas and history behind them, their uses and their materials. It also gives an account of Åke Axelsson’s professional career over some 60 years from his childhood on  a small farm in Småland in the 1930s and 1940s to his training as a cabinetmaker and interior designer and the way in which he has worked with the public domain from libraries, restaurants and Sweden’s parliament to Stockholm’s Royal Palace.
