Åke’s “Gästis” series dates from the time when he was responsible for a total renovation of a restaurant and vocational catering college in the provincial town of Leksand. At the time, Leksand’s ice-hockey team was very successful and the Gästis premises served as the club’s meeting point. “They were tough lads so the chairs had to be able to withstand hard usage.” The chair was manufactured using a tried-and-tested method in which the legs were glued into a layered ring. The basic model was developed into new variants including Merkurius (1992) with a taller “Windsor-style” back for Sweden’s new parliamentary library. The Moderna I (2009) & Moderna II were used in the restaurant at Moderna Museet. And in 2019 the chair was chosen for the Art Bakery at NK Parkaden. The Gästis chair is manufactured by Gärsnäs.
