“Vaxholmaren” is one of Åker’s classic designs: comfortable, robust and stylish. It was designed for the new library in Åkersberga outside Stockholm which, at the time, was part of the same municipality as the historic little town of Vaxholm. The theme of the chair is a play on designs in which slender battens grow out of the strict volume of the chair to the circular back. “The idea was to use the square and the circle and see how they could be united in a functional design”. The chair won third prize in the Nordic Furniture Competition of 1978. Gärsnäs started manufacturing the chair in 1979 and it appeared in the Blå Porten restaurant in Stockholm. Vaxholmaren is still manufactured by Gärsnäs, though it is now made using CNC technology.
